3 reasons why del.icio.us is truly better than digg

This is not a troll. I swear I’ll try to be abjective.

Here’s a little story to start with. You all know 24 ways sure you do. You’ll agree too that at least, at the very least, 60% of the articles they deliver every year are really worth reading and sharing.

I, cafefort have submitted not 1, not 2, not even 20 but all of the 24 articles published in december 2007 to digg, and not a single article got more than 15 diggs. Yes really.

In the other hand, I was the first to submit some others (not all) to del.icio.us and belive me almost 75% of my submissions went to the front page and are still popular.

The question now is: WHY?

Here’s my humble try to answer it:

Reason 1: Digg is about people more than content.

In fact, if these articles weren’t that popular in digg that’s because I’m not “popular” in digg. I’m not popular in del.icio.us, but in digg, the more friend you have, the more shouts you can emit hence the more your submission is dugg.

Reason 2: Digging is less engaging than bookmarking.

Digging a story is easier because you don’t have much to loose. You’ll say, what a could we loose if we bookmark in del.icio.us? The answer is simple: pollute your bookmarks with stuff that don’t interest you. If you want an analogy, let’s say that digging is saying “I like you” and bookmarking is like saying “I want to marry you!”. See? :)

Reason 3: Selfishness

Maybe I’m wrong, but why don’t people that find good stories digg them if they’re already submitted to digg? Digg is almost about being the first to bring the information. You bet that thousands of digg users knew about 24ways articles, why didn’t they dugg the stories?

I’m sure this post won’t be poplar on digg, and maybe not in del.icio.us but this is for two differents reasons:

  • It won’t on digg, because I only have 23 friends and even if I shout them all, they won’t all digg ths story.
  • Maybe it won’t be popular in del.icio.us because that’s not very “critical” to be bookmarked.

Thanks for reading, please feel free to tell me what you think and share if you like.

I have not found delicious to a very useful tool. I am not partial to digg either. Since the inception of the shout I have been annoyed by more spam because of it. Just because you digg an incredible article doesn’t mean others will like. I guess that helps make your point!

Both Digg and Del.icio.us sucks if You want traffic on your site.Waaaaaay better option is using StumbleUpon.I dont want to explain how or why,but 5000 visits in 48h on my site describes all.It is the only way to get laser sharp targetted traffic. And not only for one post.
